Actor/environmentalist Ted Danson returned to St. Andrew’s to host two events celebrating nature’s gifts and supporting the church’s ministries. “Gifts from the Earth” included a sumptuous hors d’oeuvre buffet, music by flutist Anthony Fleish and guitarist Brian David, a raffle, and a live auction with Danson as guest auctioneer. One highlight was when an anonymous bidder called in to compete with Danson for a Hopi art object, which he had suddenly decided to vie for. After the price had risen considerably, the caller identified herself as Mary Steenburgen, Danson’s actress/wife.
In the second event, “Gifts from the Ocean,” Danson was joined by his brother-in-law Loren Haury, who is a photographer and biological oceanographer, and St. Andrew’s rector, The Rev. Monica Whitaker, to share information and perspectives on ways to address the earth’s endangered oceans. Danson co-authored Oceana: Our Endangered Oceans and What We Can Do to Save Them and is a frequent speaker on the subject. Ted’s sister, Jan Haury, moderated the panel.
